While the Group 1 Produce Stakes winning filly Yosei is running in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes on the weekend, she is really being aimed at a Thousand Guineas run later in the season.
While trainer Stuart Webb expects her to be competitive in the McNeil Stakes on the weekend, he is realistically preparing her for the longer runs she will take on later this year.
“She’s definitely on a Thousand Guineas and possibly a VRC Oaks preparation and I’d expect her to be finishing off well late,” said Webb. “But probably over 1200 metres there are sharper, more brilliant horses around.”
“She’ll be more competitive when she gets to 1400 or 1600 metres.”
This isn’t terrific news for anyone with money on her in the McNeil Stakes, but it does bode well for her Thousand Guineas chances. She is currently $17 in the Thousand Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, but the results of the weekend’s racing could change things.
Given her lack of experience prior to this race, Webb has a fairly busy season planned for Yosei.
“After Saturday she’ll go to the Thousand Guineas Prelude in three weeks and at this stage probably to Sydney for the Flight Stakes before coming back for the Thousand Guineas.”
“I think she can get to the Oaks. We all know that you don’t necessarily have to be a great stayer to get the trip.”
Yosei is definitely a horse to watch in the lead up to the Thousand Guineas, and early faith in her could definitely pay off well.
