2011 Thousand Guineas Final Field, Barriers & Odds

October 10th, 2011

The Thousand Guineas 2011 final field and barriers have been released by Racing Victoria in anticipation of the three-year-old fillies’ classic running at Caulfield Racecourse this Wednesday, October 12, bookmakers around the country also opening their updated Thousand Guineas odds.

Programmed as Caulfield Race 6 and due to jump at 3:40pm (EDT) on Wednesday, this year the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) attracted a final field of 12 acceptances.

Topping the 2011 Thousand Guineas odds and betting markets at Luxbet is Mark Kavanagh’s undefeated daughter of Fastnet Rock, Atlantic Jewel.

After taking her career record to three wins from as many runs with an easy three length success over 1400 metres at Caulfield last-start on September 24, Atlantic Jewel has been the dominant Thousand Guineas favourite.

Drawn ideally in barrier four with Michael Rodd engaged for Wednesday, Atlantic Jewel will take some beating and is currently paying $1.50 to become the Thousand Guineas winner through Luxbet.

There is only one other Thousand Guineas 2011 acceptor at single-figure odds, the Robert Smerdon-trained Mosheen paying $5.50.

Last season’s Golden Slipper runner-up has suffered an early blow drawing awkwardly with gate 10 in the Thousand Guineas barriers, but after her brilliant three length victory in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 2, Mosheen is not without her supporters.

Occupying the third line of Thousand Guineas betting at a generous price through Luxbet are Peter Moody’s last-start Flight Stakes second placegetter Hallowell Belle who has never finished out of the money in her eight starts to date, and the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Nadeem filly Sharnee Rose paying $15 in her first black type assignment.

Other notable 2011 Thousand Guineas fillies and their Luxbet odds include Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Bliss Street ($19), stablemate to the favourite Celebrity Girl ($21) and Moody’s recent Bill Stutt Stakes runner-up Cute Emily ($26).

Of Flying Spur filly Bliss Street, the Perth raider last seen running three lengths away second to Mosheen in the Edward Manifold, trainer Dan Morton believes they are a genuine chance to upset the favourites.

“I have got reservations but I am very happy with our filly going into the race this week,” he said.

“It is a tough race with a half-a-dozen genuine chances, but this was the race we have been aiming at and, hopefully, having her right for.

“It is a small field, but a quality field, and we have been up with them so far so hopefully things will go our way and we will be right amongst it.”

Further down the markets Luxbet punters may find value bets for their Thousand Guineas 2011 exotics in the likes of the Peter Snowden-trained Disputes ($41) coming off a win in the Listed Reginald Allen Handicap at Rosehill, John Thompson’s Encosta De Lago filly Kneeling ($61) and Zabeel three-year-old Rahveel ($51) who ran fourth in the Edward Manifold Stakes last start.

Rounding out this year’s Thousand Guineas field and odds are then triple-figure long-shots Manhattan Maid ($101) from the Ballarat stables of Darren Weir and Anthony Freedman’s Crucial ($101) who is in the extreme outside barrier 12.
