Traveston Girl a Realistic Chance in 2014 Thousand Guineas

September 30th, 2014

Laying a great account for herself over two black type starts since arriving in Victoria this time in, Queensland-based trainer Tony Gollan is confident classy three-year-old Traveston Girl is capable of figuring in contention in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11th.

Claiming a total of two wins from her five competitive starts so far, Traveston Girl has arguably hit her straps in Melbourne despite being unable to figure in the places, finishing fourth in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) first-up on September 13th before again finishing just off the pace in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) last time out.

Confident she exhibits the class in line with a leading three-year-old filly and genuine black type contender, Gollan told News Limited a less-than ideal headwind during the running of the Thousand Guineas Prelude likely played a part in the Flying Spur filly’s late fade, but is confident figuring in contention in what will be her maiden Group 1 appearance.

“She struggled in that headwind on the weekend and she didn’t really want to charge into it,” Gollan said.

“But I thought her run was good heading to the mile. I’m not saying she is a good thing or anything in the Thousand Guineas but she is a realistic chance.”

Unlucky to be blocked for a run when sixth in the Quest Breakfast Creek Handicap (1030m) on debut on June 11th, Traveston Girl more than stamped her claims as one to watch when winning both the Mount Franklin Sparkling F Maiden (1200m) and Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap (1200m) back-to-back in her only two other starts prior to the Cap D’Antibes Stakes.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Thousand Guineas is due to be released by Wednesday, October 8th.
