Amicus Secures Upset Win in 2014 Thousand Guineas

October 11th, 2014

Classy filly Amicus has produced a huge upset at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon, displaying an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to win the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) by half a length.

Jumping from the gates well, the Fastnet Rock filly was immediately led to the front of the pack, settling alongside Traveston Girl and setting a noticeably quick tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend.

Finding a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight, Amicus quickly spooled up and charged past Traveston Girl, sustaining a strong-enough sprint to finish ahead of Traveston Girl; Sabatini beating Bring Me The Maid in a photo for third.

Jockey Hugh Bowman delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Amicus in the 2014 Thousand Guineas and was quick to credit trainer Chris Waller for preparing her in Victoria this time in.

“I won a maiden on her back in autumn and straight away I said to Chris I think she’s Flight Stakes class, the Sydney equivalent to the Thousand Guineas and he’s brought her to Melbourne and given her a Melbourne prep and its paid off,” Bowman said.

“She jumped well, I pushed forward from a wide barrier and she had to do a bit of work but once I got smothered up in behind the leader that just helped her around this track which the last couple of starts she hasn’t got around too well and she was too strong.”

Waller was understandably thrilled to have saddled Amicus to victory in the 2014 Thousand Guineas, and revealed he is yet to settle on a next point of call for the classy three-year-old this time in.

“Both her runs down here have been very good, she hasn’t had a lot of luck go her way,” Waller said after the Thousand Guineas.

“Last start it was a Group 2 second and she was very brave and it was a gem of a ride today; Hughie backed himself to go across which was a risk and managed to get her to switch off so beautifully.

“Saving that energy from the 1200 to the 800 was the key in that last 50m, that’s for sure.

“We’ll worry about what happens from her next week but I don’t want to jump to conclusions just yet.”

Punters who backed Amicus at generous $10 odds at and had signed up for a Ladbrokes Card will already have access to their winnings!
