Three-year-old Alaskan Rose more than stamped her claims as one to watch with an impressive win on debut and Sandown on Wednesday, and trainer Mike Moroney is confident the filly is capable of figuring as a legitimate 2015 Thousand Guineas (1600m) prospect this season.
Jumping from the gates well in the Grand Hotel Frankston BM64 (1300m), jockey Steve Arnold settled Alaskan Rose within the field of nine; allowing the race’s early leaders to set a fair tempo away from the barriers and approaching the bend.
Rounding onto the final straight with a clear racing line, the daughter of Encosta De Lago quickly spooled up before charging forward; producing a monumental turn of foot to hit the line close to five lengths in the clear of her closest rivals.
Moroney was thrilled with the effort produced by the three-year-old on Wednesday and is confident the performance points towards a standout maiden preparation.
“She looks nice and proven,” Moroney told Racing Ahead.
“Talking to Steve last night he said she just exploded – One of her furlongs would have been really quick I think between the 400 and the 200m.
“He just said she raced really professionally, she just wanted to relax … Then just went through her gears and he was quite surprised first time she really got her head going, put under a little bit of pressure. He said she just felt terrific action-wise and really quickened up.”
Yet to confirm a specific path for Alaskan Rose this time, Moroney revealed he will likely look towards a race at Caulfield next-up to get a gauge on whether or not the filly likes the Caulfield surface, before hopeful progression to the 2015 Thousand Guineas.
“We’ve just got to map a bit of a plan but we’re trying to head her to the Thousand Guineas,” Moroney said.
“We’ll just have a bit of a think about that. There’s a race in a fortnight’s time at Caulfield to give her a bit of a look there.
“We just want to go through and try and get her the best for the Thousand Guineas if we can.
“We’re pretty confident she’ll get the mile alright.”
