Second acceptances for the Thousand Guineas 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse on October 10 closed this week with just 54 three-year-old fillies left vying for a spot in the final field.
Due to run as one of the feature races on the Caulfield Guineas Day card in Melbourne next month, this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) has attracted 33 more second declarations than last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Heading the Thousand Guineas second acceptances and the early Thousand Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is now the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Street Cry filly Stay With Me ($4.20).
She has won her past two on the trot most recently defeating Peter Moody’s Group 1 winner Pasadena Girl by one and a half lengths in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 5.
Lindsay Park’s Hayes & Dabernig have paid the second acceptance fee for not only Stay With Me but also Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Reemah, Snitzel filly Air Apparent, Dawn Of Hope, the well fancied Sacred Eye and Hell Or Highwater who broke her maiden status at Cranbourne on September 13.
Occupying the second line of futures Thousand Guineas betting is then Moody’s Savabeel filly Pasadena Girl ($5) who won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) in Sydney back in April before her second to Stay With Me.
Pasadena Girl and Stay With Me both face off in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) this Saturday at Caulfield, a race that last year’s Thousand Guineas winner Amicus (2014) ran second in.
Other fillies high up the all-in Thousand Guineas betting markets still in contention following the second round of acceptances include the undefeated Michael Moroney-trained Alaskan Rose ($8), Tony McEvoy’s last start winner over the 1400m at Caulfield Don’t Doubt Mamma ($8), Phillip Stokes’ Adelaide-trained Quezette Stakes third placegetter Miss Gunpowder ($11) and Sagaronne ($13).
As a two-year-old in the winter Real Saga filly Sagaronne, prepared on the Gold Coast by Toby Edmonds, was second past the post behind Chris Waller’s now Caulfield Guineas favourite Press Statement in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m).
She returned in the Atlantic Jewel this time in but was disappointing first-up running a well beaten 11th, an effort she is out to improve on when stepped out over more distance next start.
Gai Waterhouse is yet to trainer a Thousand Guineas winner but still has three in the mix this year with her Silver Shadow Stakes – Furious Stakes double winner Speak Fondly who ran second in the Golden Rose last time out, last start Warwick Farm winner Flamboyant Lass and Sempre Libera.
The most notable withdrawal from the list of potential Thousand Guineas runners this season was the undefeated Petits Filous who instead targets shorter distance features.
2015 Thousand Guineas final acceptances close on Tuesday October 6 before race day that Saturday so stay tuned.
