2016 Thousand Guineas an Option for Modern Wonder

Troy Corstens has underlined the 2016 Thousand Guineas (1600m) as a likely spring target for Modern Wonder following the filly’s impressive debut win at Morphettville over the weekend.

Modern Wonder was rated little chance of success in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) as a competitive debutant, but jumped from the barriers well and took a good position within the field of eleven from the outset.

Pressing forward upon arriving at the final straight, the Snitzel filly immediately responded with a big turn of foot when asked for an extra effort by jockey Stephen Baster; charging clear and savaging the line two lengths ahead of closest rival Motown Lil.

Corstens was understandably thrilled with Modern Wonder’s first-up performance and told Racing Ahead he and the team were pleased to see her work translate into immediate success.

“She’s a beautiful filly,” Corstens said.

“She’s always been a nice filly and in her first preparation she showed a bit, but not as much as she’s shown this preparation, she’s continued to improve.

“We were always only going to give her the one run and there was a bit of a lack of suitable races.

“We knew she only wanted the 1000m and then when that popped up, we thought we might as well have a crack at that.”

Corstens revealed he is unsure if the filly will get a mile, but confirmed she will be set on a path towards the 2016 Thousand Guineas upon resuming in spring, with her early carnival results to dictate where she goes.

“She is out of a predominantly sprinting family, and I think with that sort of filly you aim them all to get to the Thousand Guineas,” Corstens said.

“We’ll probably give her a couple of runs and see if she is going to get to the mile or if she should be get to the sprinting trips.

“I wouldn’t put my life on it, but she does settle beautifully in her races so it will be interesting to see how she comes back.”

Standout filly Yankee Rose remains clear favourite in early 2016 Thousand Guineas betting markets.
