Harlow Gold Primed for 2016 Thousand Guineas

October 6th, 2016

Prominent owner Wylie Dalziel is confident that Harlow Gold is a legitimate winning chance when she lines up for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Harlow Gold is yet to line up amongst black type company, but has more than earned her position in the 2016 Thousand Guineas field having taken out each of the John Duff & Co Maiden Plate (1400m) and National Jockey Trust Plate (1600m) with complete ease at her two most recent starts.

By prominent New Zealand sire Tavistock, Dalziel is confident that Harlow Gold’s pedigree will stand up in the 2016 Thousand Guineas and believes that the booking of up-and-coming hoop Regan Bayliss could mean the difference in success.

“I probably had room for about four or five to be able to syndicate and this was a filly that we looked at and straight away got a good vibe about her,” Dalziel told AAP.

“We took a punt on Tavistock and just said ‘there’s no budget on her’. She was just one of those horses that grabs you and you really want to take home with you.

“So we bought her for $200,000, outbid a few people, and so far we’re looking good.

“Regan, I believe is very level-headed. He’s very disciplined and he’s a super rider,” Dalziel said.

“He deserves a shot at a Group One, just like we do.

“If it’s our first Group One, it will be his first Group One. He’s done all the work on her. He’s a good kid. And he’s a superstar.

“He’ll give her a good ride and he’ll be pumped if she wins.”

Tavistock has produced notable stayers Volkstok‘n’Barrell, Tarzino and Tavago through recent seasons, and Dalziel confirmed that Harlow Gold will also chase long distance targets this time in.

“If we can win a Group One Thousand Guineas over 1600, we’ll be pretty excited going forward for the Oaks,” he said.

Harlow Gold debuted to racing for third in the Phar Lap Club Plate (1100m) in May this year, but was returned to the paddock with a view towards major Spring Carnival targets.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 Thousand Guineas odds, for which Harlow Gold can be taken at a quote of $9.50 for success or $3.10 to finish in the first three.
