Global Glamour wins 2016 Thousand Guineas

October 8th, 2016

Global Glamour has won the Group 1 Thousand Guineas 2016 on Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day scoring an interstate Group 1 double on successive Saturdays in a gutsy all-the-way effort in her Melbourne debut.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Global Glamour ($4.60) held off a strong fight from the back-in-form Quezette Stakes winner I Am A Star ($26)w ho finished second at the big odds with the Simon Miller-trained Perth raider Whispering Brook ($8.50) in third rounding out the Thousand Guineas trifecta.

Today’s win is the second Group 1 victory for Global Glamour in a week, after the Star Witness filly won the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) also over a mile at Randwick on October 1st.

“To back her [Global Glamour] up within the week. She was pretty dominant there in the Flight Stakes,” winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy said post-win.

“Timmy Clark, to his credit, wasn’t able to be here today…he gave me a few little pointers to keep her sweet.

“She got out [of the gates] on terms and got into a lovely rhythm.

“She’s very tough. She’s well put together, well made, light on her feet and she’s got her good share of ability as well.

“I knew I was going to be hard to catch and she proved that.”

Waterhouse scored her ninth Flight Stakes win with Global Glamour, but the daughter of Star Witness was the trainer’s maiden Thousand Guineas winner.

She became the first Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas double winning filly since Guelph (2013), who McEvoy also rode to victory in the second leg three years ago.

Global Glamour could race on in Melbourne possibly extending out over further for a shot at Flemington’s Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on Thursday November 3, 2016.
